Lake Thurmond, which is also known by locals as Clarks Hill Lake was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1954 for flood prevention and hydroelectric power. It is one of the largest lakes in SC with 70,000 acres and 1,200 miles of mostly uninterrupted shoreline. Lake Thurmond is the third lake in a chain of area Corp of Engineers lakes leading to the Savannah River located near North Augusta, SC and Augusta Georgia. There are three state parks located on the South Carolina side of Lake Thurmond and several more located further in to Georgia.
Like all area Corp of Engineers owned lakes, most of the shoreline is undeveloped providing undisturbed views of nature abounds in every direction. The surrounding shoreline is sometimes interrupted by an occasional boat ramp area or area campsites. If natural beauty is what you are craving Lake Thurmond may be just where you need to be looking for it.
